Sixth Grade marks an important turning point as students begin to see the world with greater objectivity. They become increasingly interested in understanding how things work, asking thoughtful questions, seeking evidence, and discovering the relationships between cause and effect. Alongside this growing intellectual capacity, they continue to strengthen their sense of responsibility, integrity, and belonging within their classroom community.
Rome and the Middle Ages
The curriculum meets this developmental shift by inviting students to explore the foundations of the modern world. Through the study of Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages, students consider themes of leadership, citizenship, justice, perseverance, and the evolution of societies. Biography and historical stories encourage students to reflect on the choices individuals make and the lasting impact those choices can have on the world.
Scientific Investigation
As their curiosity about the physical world expands, students engage in hands on scientific investigations. Studies in Mineralogy, Astronomy, Geography, and Physics encourage careful observation, thoughtful experimentation, and an appreciation for the patterns and laws that shape the natural world. Rather than simply memorizing facts, students are invited to discover principles through direct experience and inquiry.
Mathematics and Geometric Drawing
Mathematics becomes increasingly practical and precise. Students strengthen their understanding of fractions, percentages, formulas, geometry, and emerging algebraic thinking while applying mathematical concepts to meaningful, real world situations. Geometric drawing develops accuracy, concentration, and an appreciation for the beauty and order found in mathematics.
Language Arts continues to cultivate strong readers, writers, and communicators. Students deepen their skills in grammar, composition, research, and analytical writing while exploring literature that challenges them to think critically and express their ideas with clarity and confidence.

World Geography broadens students' understanding of diverse landscapes, climates, cultures, and ecosystems, helping them recognize the interconnectedness of people and places across the globe. Through artistic mapmaking, research, and discussion, students develop a growing awareness of their place within a larger human story.

Throughout the year, students continue to cultivate creativity, resilience, and practical skills through Music, Handwork, Farming and Gardening, Games and Movement, and Social Emotional Learning. These experiences encourage collaboration, perseverance, and self awareness while supporting the healthy development of head, heart, and hands.
At Cedar Springs, Sixth Grade is a year of discovery and growing responsibility. As students learn to observe the world more carefully and think more deeply, they also develop the confidence, compassion, and character needed to meet new challenges with curiosity and purpose.
Caitlin Amajor
Our Teacher
After receiving a BA in History with a European Concentration from UC Santa Cruz, Caitlin gained her certification in Waldorf teaching from Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, CA. As a class teacher in the upper grades, teaching grades 5-8 over a period of seven years, she gained a deep love for the middle school curriculum and all that it entails. Some of her favorite subjects to teach are Geometry, Physics, Painting, and History. Over the past seven years, Caitlin has worked for Waldorfish.com as a course creator and instructor, as well as an administrative assistant. This work has cultivated a connection with the homeschooling community, and expanded her ability to bring Waldorf curriculum to a wider community through new and creative methods. In her free time, Caitlin enjoys spending time with her family, baking, and traveling.
