Seventh Grade meets students as they move through early adolescence, becoming increasingly aware of both themselves and the wider world. They question, imagine, challenge assumptions, and seek greater meaning in their experiences. This is a time of tremendous intellectual, emotional, and physical growth, and the curriculum is designed to meet students with both academic rigor and compassionate guidance.
The Renaissance and Age of Exploration
The study of the Renaissance, Reformation, and the Age of Exploration mirrors the seventh grader's own spirit of discovery. Students examine moments in history when new ideas reshaped humanity's understanding of science, art, culture, and the world itself. Through these studies, they grapple with questions of innovation, ethics, courage, and the consequences of human choices, while considering diverse perspectives and the experiences of cultures around the globe.
Physiology, Health, and Physical Science
Science invites students to look more deeply into both the human body and the physical world. Through studies in Physiology, Health and Nutrition, Physics, and Chemistry, students cultivate careful observation, scientific thinking, and an appreciation for the remarkable systems that sustain life. Hands on investigations encourage curiosity, experimentation, and thoughtful reflection.
Mathematics
Mathematics challenges students to think abstractly while strengthening precision, perseverance, and problem solving. As students build confidence in pre algebra, geometry, ratios, proportions, and mathematical reasoning, they develop the habits of mind needed to approach increasingly complex ideas with resilience and creativity.
Language Arts and Creative Writing
Language Arts becomes a powerful avenue for self expression and critical thinking. Students read engaging literature, write analytical and creative essays, develop persuasive arguments, conduct research, and refine their ability to communicate with clarity and purpose. Creative Writing provides opportunities to explore poetry, narrative, and personal voice while encouraging students to express their unique perspectives with confidence.
Artistic and Practical Life
Perspective drawing, inspired by the Renaissance, challenges students to see the world from new vantage points while cultivating patience, observation, and artistic skill. Alongside this, Music, Handwork, Farming and Gardening, Games and Movement, and Social Emotional Learning continue to enrich the seventh grade experience, fostering creativity, resilience, collaboration, and a deep sense of responsibility for oneself, others, and the natural world.
Field Studies and Experiential Learning
Throughout the year, experiential learning extends beyond the classroom through field studies, outdoor education, service opportunities, and collaborative projects that strengthen leadership, responsibility, and community. Students are encouraged to discover that learning is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about becoming thoughtful, capable, and compassionate contributors to the world around them.
