Our history

The History of cedar springs

Founded in 1989, the original Cedar Springs Waldorf School provided independent Waldorf education until its closing in 2021 serving Parent-Child through 8th Grade families for nearly 32 years.

For three years between 2021 and 2024, CSWS leased to the Cedar Springs Private Education Association (CSPEA) providing Waldorf-inspired learning initially to Early Children and a few grades.  This program grew to approximately 80 students Parent-Child through Sixth Grade in 2023-2024.

In 2024, Cedar Springs Learning Center was established to provide Waldorf-inspired programs to more families in Placerville and surrounding communities. The Cedar Springs Learning Center (CSLC) is held on the former Cedar Springs Waldorf School (CSWS) campus and is guided by many of Cedar Springs's vision, mission, values, and governing principles.

The roots of Cedar Springs date back to 1987 when a small group of parents concerned about the quality of their children’s education began investigating alternative but proven educational methods and philosophies.  Two years later, after extensive research, they formed the Cedar Springs Waldorf School, the 121st Waldorf school in the USA.

"Our children come to us vibrant, innocent, curious, and boisterous, but there must stand before them the examples, the guidance and leadership of the surrounding adults, parents, and teachers—those who stand for moral conscience and courage, resiliency, and uprightness that they may be shown the way to higher good and caring for the world. I am confident there will be a new creation and new rendition of this marvelous education."

gratitude

We are deeply grateful for the teachers, families, and friends who helped build and sustain CSWS over three decades.  We also appreciate the knowledgeable and dedicated faculty and community leaders who have been growing and shepherding our Waldorf-inspired programs in recent years so we can serve even more families in the future.

Our Verse

May we strive together with good will
To form a community,
Where the gifts of each one are acknowledged

And where each one gives one’s best;
That the highest spiritual powers

May help us fulfill our purpose.
May the light of inner vision guide us.
May the beauty and strength of spirit
Shine through our daily endeavors
To bring forth a community
Worthy of all children,
That they may learn to live in spirit awareness
Blessing the world with their deeds.
